Four ‘Engine of the Year’ titles for BMW

EngineBMW has walked away with four wins out of eight capacity classes at this year’s ‘Engine of the Year’ awards.

The victorious quartet consisted of the V8 from the M3, the single turbo 35i engine, the twin-turbo 23d engine, and the turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the MINI Cooper S. Since 1999 BMW engines have notched up more than 50 victories courtesy of the awards, with this year’s winning engines being chosen by an international jury of 76 engine journalists from 35 countries.

The MINI four-cylinder engine notched up its fourth consecutive win, and its last, as from next year its recently announced successor will be taking its place and hopefully bringing home another trophy.

The twin-turbo 23d engine enjoyed a debut victory with judges praising pulling power and its outstanding efficiency and the experts commented that in view of the qualities of this engine, it appeared doubtful as to whether diesel engines will get any better at all in future.

The single-turbo version of the 35i engine took over where its predecessor left off, with the previous incarnation notching up no less than three victories in the last three years, with two of those being the ‘Engine of the Year’ award itself.

The M3 V8 won its third consecutive victory in its capacity class with experts praising its combination of outstanding performance and efficiency.
