BMW has two entries in the Ward’s 2012 10 Best Engines Awards list, with the new two-litre TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine, joining the three-litre N55 TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine, which its second consecutive appearance on the list.
Compiled by American automotive trade magazine, Ward’s AutoWorld, the list is made up of engine available in the US market and over a two-month testing period, Ward’s editors evaluate each engine according to a number of objective and subjective tests, as well as taking into account power, torque, noise and so on, before choosing the 10 best engines.
“BMW’s all-new 4-cylinder proves once and for all that we have nothing to fear with the latest downsizing trend,” said Tom Murphy, executive editor of WardsAuto World magazine.
“Our editors loved it in the Z4, a sporty roadster that loses none of its zip with this spectacular turbocharged 4-cylinder But they liked it even better in a larger, more practical vehicle, the 5 Series sedan.”
The N55 received similar praise, with Drew Winter, editor-in-chief, saying “The N55 sings like no other engine in the world. It is a true benchmark.”
